Michele Campana

(Modigliana, Forlì, 1885 – Florence, 1968), a poet, met his contemporary Dino Campana at boarding school, although he was not a close relative but shared the same Marradi lineage. After moving to Florence where his father opened a restaurant, he continued to study as a self-taught poet and it was at the tables of the restaurant that he met Mario Ferrigni, director of the democratic Florentine daily newspaper “Il Nuovo giornale”, who offered him a job, first as a contributor and then as an editor. From this moment on, he began an intense journalistic activity for numerous newspapers – “Il giornale del commercio”, “La Toscana”, “Fantastica”, “L'Arena”, “Il popolo d'Italia”, “Corriere della Sera”, “La stampa”, “Corriere padano” – and a copious narrative and lyrical production: “Rime giovanili” (1904), “In paganìa” (1911), “Un anno sul Pasubio” (1916), “Perché ho ucciso?” (1916), “Creature” (1927), “In Romagna” (1931), “The musicality of the Italian language” (1934), “The son of the hero” (1938), “Under the sun of Rimini” (1939), “Motives” (1934) and “Other motives” (1939). After the fall of fascism, which he had supported since the beginning, he had to accept the hospitality of relatives and live modestly until, in 1948, he was offered the position of chief reporter for “Il Tirreno” and was thus able to resume his journalistic activity. In the sixties new literary works were published, especially poetic: “Gioia di lotte” (1955), “Tre squilli” (1959), “Salire” (1960), “Fiamma dall'ombre” (1962), “Marameo con dieci dita” (1961).
