oil on canvas, 150x130 cm
signed and dated lower right P. Conti '80
The theme of Sapphic Eros, which Conti addresses in numerous paintings starting from 1977, is a tribute to the Flowers of Evil by Baudelaire. In Le amiche It achieves an unusual violence and drama. The feline dynamism of the corpulent nudes, the gripping embrace of their bodies, extends to the brushstrokes. In its frenetic rhythms, the entire composition seems to evoke a desperate cry, communicated from man to all of nature, bringing us back, albeit in a different style, to an Expressionist system achieved through the additional element of feeling.
